Building work has now completed on Winston Osborne House in Caerphilly

Developments

A local social landlord has transformed the vacant former Abbeyfield Sheltered Housing scheme near Caerphilly town centre into eight new apartments.

Linc Cymru appointed P&P Building and Roofing Contractors to convert and refurbish Winston Osborne House at St. Christopher's Drive into high-quality, self-contained apartments with limited on- site parking and a secure communal garden providing green space for residents.

The former older persons’ scheme closed in 2018 but it’s now been redeveloped and brought back to life

The work has been carried out using £1,019,309 of funding support from the Welsh Government’s Social Housing Grant and Housing with Care Fund.

Cllr Shayne Cook, Cabinet Member for Housing at Caerphilly County Borough Council, added “Bringing empty properties back into beneficial use and preventing homelessness are key priorities for us as a Council.  We’re delighted to support Linc in breathing new life into this vacant building, whilst helping to meet local housing need.”

Jo Yellen, project manager at Linc, said: “We’re really proud to have enabled this project and to bring an old building back to life to address local housing need by delivering much-needed accommodation for people in the city. The development is in a great location near the town centre with all the benefits of local facilities only a short distance away.

“The building fabric has been improved and hot water is provided via low carbon technology which supplies external air to a highly efficient air source heat pump attached to a water cylinder. Solar panels have been added with each apartment directly benefitting from four panels to make each apartment more energy-efficient and help residents reduce their bills.

During the work our contractor has continued to provide apprenticeship opportunities for three apprentice carpenters to give them on-site experience alongside studying in college.

We also delivered projects which supported local schools and community groups which was part of our commitment to delivering social value and community benefits to the communities in which we work.”
