Exciting Progress on Porth's New Extra Care Development: A Step Closer to Providing Quality Supportive Housing
Last year, project contractor Intelle Construction began work at the former Dan y Mynydd Care Home site. This development will revitalise the area, providing 60 extra care apartments in a four-storey building. The innovative building will offer an impressive range of amenities, including a dining area, hair salon, activity room, day care centre, offices, and an external car park.
Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, and Councillor Gareth Caple, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, visited the site on Wednesday, April 2, where they toured the development with representatives from both Linc and the contractor.
On-site, progress has been encouraging, with brickwork now completed on the upper ground floor across all four elevations of the building. Window frame installations are nearly finished, and glazing is underway on the first floor. Fireboarding of steel beams is in progress, and internal plasterboarding has started on the upper ground floor. Additional essential work, such as the installation of sprinkler and ventilation systems, is also progressing well.
Externally, the roof installation is nearly half-completed, while the substation has been installed and is now connected to the plant room.
Looking ahead, the next major steps on-site will include the completion of the brickwork, followed by the removal of the large crane once the west elevation is finished. The roof will be completed, and glazing across the building will be finalised, making the structure watertight. Another key milestone will be the activation of the site's electrical power.
The development is on track for completion in spring 2026, bringing much-needed homes and support to the community. Both Linc and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will continue to keep local residents updated on the project's progress.
Councillor Gareth Caple, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: “This exciting development in Porth is a key milestone in our ongoing commitment to modernising care options for older people. It will increase the number of extra care apartments in the region, and once complete, will be the third such development in Rhondda Cynon Taf in recent years, following Maesyffynnon in Aberaman and Cwrt yr Orsaf in Graig.
“We are also working on a specialist care accommodation project in Gelli and progressing site clearance in Mountain Ash, where planning consent has been granted for a development that will include extra care housing, dementia care, and 'Later Living' accommodation. In addition, we are planning new care accommodations in Ferndale and Church Village, focusing on dementia care and supported living for adults with learning disabilities.
“I visited the site last summer to see the initial infrastructure work being completed, and it’s amazing to see how much progress has been made since. This project is not only delivering much-needed care accommodation but is also ensuring that a prominent site, once a care home, is being put to excellent use.”
Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, added: “Extra care allows people to live independently with 24/7 support for their needs. These developments provide modern, bright spaces that foster a sense of community, encouraging residents to engage both within the building and the wider local community. The two recently completed schemes in Aberaman and Graig have become important hubs, and we are confident that the Porth scheme will meet the growing demand for such accommodation locally.
“I want to thank the contractor’s team for hosting us and allowing us to see the progress firsthand. It’s clear that excellent progress is being made, with all four elevations now in place and significant work underway on the roof and windows. I look forward to seeing even more progress as we move closer to the scheme’s completion next year.”
Jo Yellen, Project Manager at Linc, said: “It’s fantastic to see the development taking shape. Our partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is focused on delivering high-quality, supported homes to help people live independently within a safe and welcoming environment. As the build progresses, we’re excited to move closer to welcoming residents to this much-needed extra care facility next year.”
