Local Community Benefit From New Development

Community
A NEW HOUSING development in Ebbw Vale is supporting local projects through a community benefit commitment.

As part of Linc Cymru’s community regeneration initiative, all new developments built by Linc must include a contractor commitment that sees them provide support to groups in the local community.

When Linc began working with Pendragon Design and Build in Ebbw Vale on the Gwaun Helyg development, both companies were committed to finding meaningful projects that deserved financial support, and through many conversations with local people, it was a school and a sports club that stood out.

Willowtown Community Primary School have been supported to create a memorial garden, while the local football club have been able to improve access to their club with a new path.

The memorial garden at the school saw children work hard to create a beautiful and inviting space in memory of their teacher, Miss Pritchard.

Maya, Year 3 Willowtown Community Primary School, said:

“In the memorial garden we have been planting plants to make it more colourful. When we started all the fences were brown and looked old so we thought we would paint it to make it look more colourful and happy place.”

James Johansen, Pendragon Design and Build said:

“We like to support local community projects where we can and I am very impressed with this beautiful memorial garden, I was particularly surprised by the skilled labour provided here by the year 3 pupils,  it is a fabulous finish, and the children seem really proud of it.”

While the children at Willowtown Primary School transformed the memorial garden, work was taking place to improve the accessibility of Ebbw Vale’s football ground.

James explains:

“We at Pendragon are happy to help the football club, in partnership with Linc, it is an important part of the community and hopefully due to the path improvement works it will be an even bigger part of the community going forward.”

Grant Matthews, RTB Ebbw Vale Football Club said:

“Thank you very much you have improved our ground no end and made it a lot more accessible to a lot more people.

It worked so well. We have got a school with disabled children who are able to run their sports day here this year because of our facilities being improved, which is massive for us. To be able to put something back into the local community which is what we have always tried to do but we haven’t always had the facilities to do it is fantastic.”

Justine Scorrer, Community Regeneration Manager Linc said:

"It has been a pleasure to work with RTB Ebbw Vale Football Club, Willowtown Community Primary School, and Pendragon Design and Build and I am thrilled to see the finished product and hear about all the benefits the work has enabled"
