Transformation of former Newport nightclub to start

Developments

Work starts this month to transform a former Newport nightclub into 37 apartments.

Zanzibar on Stow Hill first opened as the Stowaway during the 1970s. Over the years clubbers have known it as names including Escapade and Brooklyn Heights.

A fire destroyed most of the building in 2018 but the Grade II listed façade survived.

Housing association Linc Cymru is behind the plans to bring the new homes for rent to the city centre using contractor, P&P Builders.

Sian Diaz, Linc Cymru’s development director, said: “Zanzibar was a well-known Newport landmark with thousands of people enjoying nights out there over the years.

“The fire devastated the three-floor building but thankfully the beautiful façade survived.

“Our work will see the back of the building demolished and rebuilt with residents entering their homes through the stunning front entrance which will be preserved.

“Music heritage will be a key part of this project. We are working with Arts & Business Cymru. They want to talk to people who recall some of the famous musicians who played this club and see what we can do in the community to mark the stories and ensure they’re not forgotten.”

Linc Cymru and Arts and Business Cymru have set up a Facebook Group called ‘Former Zanzibar Nightclub’ for people to share their memories and stories about the club.

Contractors will start to set up on site towards the end of May with scaffolding appearing on the building in June.

The site is due to be finished during summer 2026.
