Transforming Zanzibar: Affordable Homes for Newport

Developments
Representatives from Linc Cymru and Pobl gathered with P&P Builders this week to celebrate the start of work on the former Zanzibar nightclub site in Newport. The event marked a key milestone in the redevelopment of this well-known local landmark, with demolition now complete and construction underway.

The project will transform the historic site on Stow Hill into 37 much-needed apartments for rent, bringing new homes to the heart of Newport city centre.

Zanzibar, which first opened as the Stowaway in the 1970s, was a thriving nightlife destination under various names, including Escapade and Brooklyn Heights. In 2018, a fire destroyed much of the structure, but the historic front façade survived and will be retained as part of the redevelopment.

Linc Cymru purchased the site in 2019 with a vision to provide affordable, sustainable homes in the city centre. Designed with a fabric-first approach, the homes will be all-electric with an EPC A rating and include photovoltaic solar panels, supporting Linc’s commitment to sustainable development.

The design also complements the wider regeneration of the area, including the rebuild of Bethel Community Church, and reflects Linc’s dedication to preserving Newport’s architectural heritage.

The project is being supported by the Welsh Government’s Social Housing Grant, helping to bring much-needed affordable housing to the area.

“It’s fantastic to see work starting on site. This project is about more than just building homes—it’s about breathing new life into a site that holds fond memories for so many people. By preserving the stunning Grade II listed façade while creating high-quality, energy-efficient homes, we’re ensuring the legacy of this building continues for future generations.”
