Transforming Zanzibar: Affordable Homes for Newport
The project will transform the historic site on Stow Hill into 37 much-needed apartments for rent, bringing new homes to the heart of Newport city centre.
Zanzibar, which first opened as the Stowaway in the 1970s, was a thriving nightlife destination under various names, including Escapade and Brooklyn Heights. In 2018, a fire destroyed much of the structure, but the historic front façade survived and will be retained as part of the redevelopment.
Linc Cymru purchased the site in 2019 with a vision to provide affordable, sustainable homes in the city centre. Designed with a fabric-first approach, the homes will be all-electric with an EPC A rating and include photovoltaic solar panels, supporting Linc’s commitment to sustainable development.
The design also complements the wider regeneration of the area, including the rebuild of Bethel Community Church, and reflects Linc’s dedication to preserving Newport’s architectural heritage.
The project is being supported by the Welsh Government’s Social Housing Grant, helping to bring much-needed affordable housing to the area.
